Benefits of Polished Concrete.

Polished concrete floors are hard wearing, easy to maintain, cost effective, sleek-looking and will last a lifetime. Plus, polished concrete looks great anywhere – in commercial premises, shops and private residences.

The concrete polishing process transforms new or old concrete to reveal the natural beauty of the concrete floor.  There are lots of options to choose from to suit where the polished concrete is situated and of course, aesthetics. For example — A highly polished concrete floor that looks great in your kitchen or living area is hardly going to be functional out in your driveway or around the pool, where you might want a similar look but with a non-slip finish. Perhaps you don’t want an exposed aggregate look, but you do want a highly polished finish. Whatever you have in mind, we’ll take the time to explain what your options are, how much it will cost, and exactly what result we can achieve for you.

Types of Polished Concrete Floors

You can choose anything from a high-gloss finish right down to a more industrial matte look. For outdoor areas, there are non-slip options too. The concrete polishing process, equipment and products used will vary depending on the level of cutting and polishing required and the level of exposed aggregate required. This is determined by the concrete’s location, age and condition. Plus of course, your personal preferences.

nil exposed polished concrete

Nil Exposure

Only the topmost layer of concrete is ground to maintain a consistent ‘creamy finish. Care is taken to expose no stones, showcasing the concrete itself rather than the aggregate. This effect is understated, sophisticated and becoming increasingly popular. In general nil exposure is only an option for new concrete floors, because the degree of grinding required to remove glue and debris, or repair damage during restoration projects normally results in some aggregate being exposed.

Random Exposure

Sometimes referred to as ‘salt & pepper’ look, this type of polished concrete can vary from random areas of aggregate exposure interspersed with nil exposure to a more consistent low level of exposed aggregate. This stylish effect works equally well with in a matte, satin or gloss sheen.

Full Exposure

Intensive mechanical grinding is undertaken to fully expose the stones within the concrete. In the case of new slabs, there is a wide range of custom concrete mixes to choose from which will result in a floor that is stunning and exceptionally unique.

mechanically polished concrete

Mechanically Polished Concrete

Mechanical Polished Concrete is the process by which the concrete is chemically hardened and mechanically polished. Mechanical Polished Concrete differs from the topical sealed polished concrete process in that the “sheen” is not obtained by any kind of sealer, but by the concrete itself being “mechanically” polished to a flat and smooth surface.

The initial grinding stages remove any dirt or coatings from the floor, and remove the surface paste to expose the stronger concrete that lies beneath. The next grinding stages of finer grits refine the rough floor to a flat, level surface to ensure a consistent polish. And finally the higher grit resin polishing diamonds are used to progressively bring the floor to a durable, high-gloss finish. A densifier, which increases the strength and abrasion resistance, and a penetrating sealer, which acts as a stain shield, are applied to the floor at various stages throughout the process.
